The first reference to golf dates back to the
reign of King James II of Scotland. In 1457,
King James decreed that “futeball” and
“gowf” were forbidden so that Scottish
men could concentrate on their archery
practice — the better to beat their enemies,
the English, on the battlefield. Golf remained
outlawed until 1501.
