David Earnhardt

David Earnhardt begins his first season as the Lees-McRae head men’s golf coach after spending the past  golf season at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York where he worked as an assistant golf professional.

Earnhardt gained valuable experience on the course which hosted the 1929, 1959, 1974, and 2006 U.S. Open, the 1957 U.S. Women’s Open, the 1997 PGA Championship, the 2004 U.S. Amateur, and the inaugural U.S. Senior Open in 1980.  It was here, and also at Grandfather Golf & Country Club in Linville, N.C., that he had the privilege of working under Mr. John Buczek.

During the winter months Earnhardt has worked a number of places including The Club at Twin Eagles in Naples, Fla. and Arrowhead Country Club in Glendale, Arizona.  While in Florida he also worked with Dr. Jim Suttie at his academy where he reaped the benefits of working alongside the 2000 PGA National Teacher of the Year Award winner who has had the responsibility of teaching many PGA Tour and Champion Tour players.

Earnhardt began his coaching career with a stint at Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Myers, Fla. where he served as the assistant golf coach for a season.

Prior to his stint at Winged Foot, Earnhardt spent five seasons as assistant golf professional at Grandfather Golf & Country Club in nearby Linville, N.C.

David, a native of California, moved to this area in 1990 and graduated from Avery County High School.  He also is no stranger to college athletics at Lees-McRae having been a member of the cross country team for a season and the men’s basketball team for two until an ankle injury forced him off the court.  It was then that his attention turned to golf and his passion was ignited.

Earnhardt resides in Banner Elk, N.C. and enjoys competing in and watching in sports in his spare time.
